Dedication of Nevada State College library celebrates namesake, Marydean Martin

Marydean Martin generously contributed a significant amount of money to support the expansion of the NSC Library. Marydean is a tireless advocate to support the value of learning for future generations of NSC students. Her first large contribution came in the summer of 2002 - as the college prepared to open for the first time, with the donation of numerous crates of her personal book collection, Patterson said.

Students, alumni, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to submit their suggested names via an online nomination form beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 4 through 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 13.

NSC students join Andson Foundation to provide tutoring to local children in summer literacy program

Education majors at Nevada State College had a unique opportunity this summer to join forces with the Andson Foundation to participate in the Rockstar Readers Summer Literacy Program as tutors. An initiative developed by the Andson Foundation, the program is aimed to continue the literacy development of elementary students on summer break while also encouraging a love for reading at an early age.

Discovery of oldest-known Woody Guthrie recordings credited to NSC professor

The four songs, recorded off the two discs I found, are essentially the oldest known Woody Guthrie recordings in existence, said La Chapelle. The discs, called Prestos, were 10-inches in diameter, ran at 78 rpm and were composed of lacquer-covered aluminum.

The purpose of the simulation is to place the participant in the shoes of a mentally ill patient in order for them to truly develop an understanding of the difficulty these individuals have when trying to focus, listen to directions, or complete the most simple tasks, said Chaffin.

The nursing faculties at NSC and UNLV have always been very collaborative. NSC faculty and students have been actively participating in Zeta Kappa STTI events for the last five years, said Shirlee Snyder, dean of nursing at NSC. The at-large STTI chapter is just another example of the mutual support between the institutions.

Federal funding renewed for Nevada State College TRIO Upward Bound Programs

After a funding gap that spanned four months, the Nevada State College chapter of TRIO Upward Bound was notified by Senator Harry Reid's office that federal funds would be renewed for use starting June 1, 2012. The two grants awarded by the U.S. Department of Education will help sustain the program at NSC through 2017.

Board of Regents appoints Bart Patterson as President of Nevada State College

Bart Patterson was named President of Nevada State College during a special session of the Board of Regents on April 30, 2012. Serving as the interim president of the college since November 1, 2011, Patterson is the seventh individual to assume the leadership role since the college's inception in 2002.

Students recognized in local writers' group contest

Sharing their talents beyond the campus, two Nevada State College (NSC) students and one alumnus were awarded in a local writing contest organized by the Henderson Writers Group. The students who independently submitted poems and short stories were each awarded complimentary entrance to either the full or partial Las Vegas Writers Conference scheduled for April 19 21, 2012.

Since 2009 we have more than tripled the dollar amount of funds awarded to our students and that number continues to grow, stated Neil Woolf, director of financial aid at NSC. Nurse Residency Program Launched by Nevada State College and Sunrise Hospital Advances First Cohort
